About Messina
Lying at the north-eastern tip of Sicily on the strait between the island and mainland Italy, Messina is an ancient town tracing its roots back to the 8th Century BC. Its history and legends have always been inextricably connected with the sea and the Strait. The town saw many wars and conquests, suffered a devastating earthquake with a tsunami that nearly razed it to the ground in 1908, and a massive Allied bombing during World War II that took a heavy toll of human lives, but invariably recovered and went on. It is today a major commercial and military port, a centre of agriculture (citrus and other fruit, vegetables, wine) and an attractive tourist destination. There are several beaches within a few kilometres from the town, in Mortelle. In Messina itself, there's a beautiful Cathedral, first erected in the 12th Century but damaged by the earthquake in 1908 and by fire in 1943, then rebuilt to the original design with splendid Gothic portals and a fine bell tower containing the largest animated clock in the world. Other notable buildings include the SS Anninziata dei Catalani Church, a fine structure reflecting Islamic and Byzantine influences and adorned by a series of blind arches, the Church of St. Francis of Assisi, the Church of San Giovanni di Malta and the Monte Vergine Monastery.
